Severance Hospital was founded in 1885 as Gwanghyewon (later renamed Jejungwon), Korea’s first Western-style hospital, by Dr. H.N. Allen. Since then, Severance has been a leading institution in Korea’s medical field, dedicated to promoting the health of the nation.

Severance was the first in Korea to pursue medical specialization to improve the quality of healthcare. It currently operates specialized centers including a rehabilitation hospital, cardiovascular hospital, eye hospital, children’s hospital, emergency medical center, and international health care center, as well as cancer clinics.

Furthermore, the hospital has continuously worked to improve medical services, declaring the Patient Rights Charter in 1993 and obtaining JCI (Joint Commission International) accreditation.
